Disordered Eating and Eating Disorders

I work with people struggling with all types of eating disorders and people who have a history of an eating disorder or disordered eating. Please contact me if you would like to discuss your particular case before booking an appointment.

My primary focus areas are nutrition therapy for binge eating disorder and compulsive overeating issues as well as disordered eating and eating disorders in competitive athletes and active individuals. I have worked with children as young as 9 years old. Anyone under 18 years old must be accompanied by at least one parent at all nutrition sessions.

I realize that people are at various stages of recovery. You may have been struggling with an eating disorder for years, been to treatment centers, or have newly discovered an eating disorder or disordered eating patterns. Or perhaps you have long been in recovery and you are just looking for support in taking care of yourself.

My approach for everyone is to start with a two-session nutrition assessment. These are 60-minute visits that occur 1-2 weeks apart. In this time, I will be able to learn from you what your past experiences have been and what you are currently looking for in nutrition support for your recovery. I will be able to give you some early skills and goals to work on based on where you are at right now. You will have a chance to work on these goals and stay in touch with me throughout the assessment process. This also gives you a chance to experiment with me as your nutrition coach to make sure you feel I’m the right person to accompany you on your journey through recovery.

How to schedule your nutrition assessment:
  • Call (202) 375-8942 or e-mail rscritchfield@gmail.com to request an appointment.
  • We will schedule your initial and follow up visits and I will send you new client forms to complete and bring with you to the first session.
  • Office hours are by appointment Monday-Saturday, typically 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Friday and 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday. Please inquire about Sunday availability.
  • Office location: 5200 27th St NW in Chevy Chase D.C., off Military Road across from Rock Creek Park in a residential neighborhood, 2 miles from Tenleytown, Friendship Heights, and Cleveland Park. Free driveway parking. Metrobus accessible. Fridays I have office hours in Tenleytown conveniently located at the metro. Please request this location when booking your sessions if you require metro.
  • Fees: The nutrition assessment fee is $350 and due at the first appointment. This fee includes two 60-minute in person counseling sessions, your comprehensive write up delivered via PDF, and additional coaching time via e-mail, or other resources (recipes links etc.) I may provide during your assessment. Check, cash, credit cards, HSA/FSA cards are accepted.
  • Insurance: I am an “out of network” provider for private insurance. I can provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement if there is an appropriate medical diagnosis. It is up to you to know the terms for reimbursement and speak to your insurance company prior to the session. I do not participate in Medicare and cannot provide Medicare approved services (renal disease, diabetes). I cannot provide a Medicare "opt out letter" to supplemental insurance at this time.

Based on what I find in the nutrition assessment, I will recommend a tailored program in line with your current state of health and wellness that will help you reach your short and long-term goals.

Setting Up a Care Team

For most people with a diagnosed eating disorder and wanting to make a full recovery, a care team is essential for effective recovery in an outpatient setting. After the assessment is complete, I will move quickly to establish a care team of at least a medical doctor and therapist specializing in treating eating disorders. I can assist you in finding health care experts to work with and I can make referrals at your request. If a care team is already in place, I will join the team and introduce myself to the team members via phone or e-mail.

If you have reservations about establishing a care team, you can bring that up to me after your initial assessment. Ultimately, it is about providing tailored support that is right for you. The value of the care team is that we can all collaborate and work with you to provide the best treatment program that can be offered in an outpatient setting. You are at the center of the care team. We are here to support you through the recovery process.

Typical Outpatient Program

If we decide to work together, you will start with nutrition sessions either weekly or every other week. I will confer with the care team and make a recommendation to you. Expect these sessions to occur regularly. For ease of scheduling, we will choose a set date and time and work together on any rescheduling needs. I have office hours on weekends for your convenience.

Sessions are usually one hour. Each session is $150. I am an “out of network” provider for insurance. I can complete a superbill and provide my NPI number for you to submit for reimbursement at your request. I also take HAS/FSA debit cards.

You can choose to purchase a package of 12 sessions at a discount of $1500 (regular rate $1800) and make 1-3 payments or pay $150 per visit.

Below are some of the types of activities we may work on:

  • Nutrition therapy sessions, focused on setting goals and reflecting on progress toward goals.
  • Understanding the science of nourishment, your body’s nutrition needs, and normal eating patterns good for your body and your wellness.
  • Dialoguing skills to help you replace disordered behaviors with new self-care behaviors.
  • Overcoming food fears.
  • Emotional and stress management coping skills.
  • Grocery shopping together.
  • Cooking together – you bring the ingredients, I teach you cooking and preparation skills. You pack the food in portions for meals.
  • Eating meals or snacks together.
  • Building intuitive eating skills.
  • Establishing realistic and balanced exercise patterns.

For many of my clients, I prefer to work with care team treatment contracts. This is a document that lists the goals for nutrition, therapy, and medical recovery. It helps everyone in the care team organize team goals and it helps you understand what you should be working on with each practitioner. After we complete the assessment and move into a treatment plan, we will discuss the use of a contract in your program.
